Charles Lidster- Browne
My work explores the life of a building from its initial design through until disintegration, or even destruction. I aim to represent the changing perception of the buildings that surround us, from the newly-built to the old.
Frequently new buildings are regarded as Subtopian: suburban utopia. When buildings become older they are often regarded as dystopian.
I find the shift in perception interesting as it raises a conflict between the need to build long-term housing stock, versus the need for profit and the free market. This commercial influence leads to a connection between architecture and mass-produced packaging. Initially, both architecture and packaging set out to be functional; however the marketing for consumer culture can cause them to become dysfunctional.
My work aims to focus on the transition from Subtopia to dystopia. The impurity of the material is intended to represent the contamination of an initial ideal with changes in perception towards it, and highlights the changing awareness of architecture, packaging, the aging process, and obsolescence.
