Silent and Still
10 minute films looped
My art practice is focused on installation, video and projection, producing mysterious, contemplative and subtle pieces. This work approaches the subjects of light and time using film to create an introspective atmosphere. Juxtaposition is created by two projections running next to each other simultaneously. Slowed down, some scenes have the appearance of textured paint or fabric; the rear projection onto draughting paper gives the appearance and clarity of a slowly evolving painting.
One film is compiled of edited opening sequences from films that won the Best Picture Academy Award, since it began in 1928. The opening sequences are extremely cinematic and visually interesting. They are made up of aerial shots and different textures such as sand, light, clouds, water, flowers and fabric.
The second film features a sky at sunset. This film is placed inside a reactive viewfinder that visually responds to any surrounding noises emitted or echoed around the gallery. Therefore the viewer must remain silent and still in order to view the complete film. This encourages a sense of reflection and engagement.
