Much of the culture of the East that was once caricatured as a melting pot of exoticism is, ironically, still viewed today as alien or even considered repressive from the vantage point of the privileged West. In my work, I hope to explore these Eastern narratives, as well as drawing on my own experiences; in this way I seek to depict it as both glorious and inviting. Inspired by my travels and experience my interpretation is, of course, tainted by a Western perspective. But these contradictions are allowed to be played out, and are represented within colour opposition that portray energy, clash of activity and even chaos, through a combination of forms – film, media and painting. Influenced by Asian works of art and film, my work particularly combines the elaborateness of Eastern film culture alongside the incorporation of film footage which attempts to explore the complexities of the contemporary context.  Mythological and contemporary themes within my work highlight the continuous conflict between actuality and belief revealed by an ongoing Orientalism.
