Victoria Love
During my degree, my skills as a designer have been improved and refined. I’ve been given the chance to explore my main interest of web design as well as undertake projects which are more centred in print.
I find many designs on the web uninspiring and corporate, so I try to create websites which look a-typical whilst remaining functional and intuitive. During my third year, I had the opportunity to design a website which focused on the accessibility issues disabled users face when navigating the Internet. This project was a challenge as I had to temper my design to consider these users whilst still retaining the unique appearance I always try to achieve. Each website I design, I learn something new and ‘Access All Areas’ encouraged me to look at new methods of navigation and ‘style switchers.’
In my second year, I designed a wayfinding system for Badminton Horse Trials, which is an annual International equestrian event, drawing a crowd of 250,000 people, making it the second largest spectator event in the world.
From my own personal experience, there was no directional signage in place to assist spectactors around the course and retail area, so I created a system which would solve this perennial problem. My design took into account the aesthetic values of the host venue, its heritage and the iconography of the sport. I also had to consider the temporary nature of the event as the venue reverts to private parkland afterward. My final outcome provided an elegant, whimsical but fully functional solution.
