Remembering Our Technological Past
I love technology and am fascinated with all types from past to present. I really wanted to choose an area I had a genuine interest in for my major project so selected technology as my base and set out to document its complete evolution visually in key areas. Technology today progresses so fast that I wanted to show where we have come from and the stops along the way which have helped us reach our current destination. I started in the 1930′s and decided to jump up in decades creating individual illustrations to demonstrate the technology of the time for each one. The categories of technology I decided to look at included; Audio players, cameras, computers, entertainment, radio receivers, telephones and televisions.
My method of working is quite methodical I like structure and perfection, I am more of an execution man rather than a conceptual thinker. Once I get an idea for a project I work towards developing the underlying formation of my elements then roll out the pattern throughout the design work. I suppose my work leans more towards modernism, however I do not limit myself with grids I use them only to aid my work not to dictate it. After experimenting with various layout possibilities and structures I come across an image of a crop circle which inspired my final designs. The crop circle featured an inner and outer circle which each featured alternating circular modules, I translated this into a vector graphic to form the basis of my timelines. Other inspiration for this project come from two brilliant books which were presented to me by my tutors; ‘Data Flow, Visualizing Information in Graphic Design’ and ‘Information is Beautiful’. Both books had really unique examples of info graphics and helped tremendously in developing my style for this project. A lot of the info graphics I researched however were very intricate and involved quite a lot of data, my style is a little more robust. I wanted to give a sense of information but also wanted work in the style I am comfortable with featuring strong shapes and bold elements.
