Illustration, for me, means being able to get utterly lost in a place of my own creation. My major project was presented as the inventory of an elderly Victorian eccentric’s death: his life’s work, his research, and snapshots of his last possessions. Everything inside the box is faked to look historically accurate; I have spent the semester half in the darkroom, and half with a very slender dip-pen and copious amounts of indian ink. Toning, dipping, dyeing, bleaching, drying, aging, printing, mixing, measuring and squinting at everything. The pleasure is all in the detail.
