Angela Carter – ‘The Werewolf’

This is the second image of three. Created by linocut.
Here the little girl travels through the forest to her grandmother’s home.  The werewolf lurks between the trees and shadows waiting for the right moment to pounce. However, the werewolf is actually her grandmother.

Folktales From Ancient Japan….

I chose three  folktales from ‘Myths & Legends of Japan’,  which was reprinted by F.Hadland Davis. I found the language quite archaic, and the characters somewhat rigid, so I decided to rewrite the legends and illustrate them as children books.  I have never been to Japan, and I was instantly drawn to Hiroshige, Hokusai and other great Japanese print makers of that time.

- ‘Lady White And Lady Yellow’ : How the Japanese imperial chrysanthemum crest / flag came to be.
- ‘The Bronze Buddha Of Kamakura And The Whale’
: A whale hears rumors of a giant bronze Buddha statue in the Japanese cit of Kamakura and being quite jealous, investigates the matter. What can be bigger than a whale? Well….
- ‘Shippeitaro And The Phantom Cats’: A wandering samurai saves a village from having to sacrifice their village maidens each year to the ‘mountain spirit’, with the help of just one dog called Shippeitaro.
