Norfolk Nursery

My aim in making this single-unit day nursery for children aged 3-5, was to make it as sustainable, green, healthy and safe as possible. So, to achieve this, I started to look at natural materials like hardwood flooring with natural oil finishes, paints without lead, not using carpets and how to provide as much natural light as possible. And then I looked at the places those natural materials came from. These ancient forests and cavesinspired me to use a cave-like approach to rooms where there were no windows- I used skylights and roof monitors to provide daylight to rooms which were like underground caves and on top I used a green roof.  Where there was space for windows I used a lot of them but also used exterior shading which, again, is similar to the way trees in a forest give shading but still let the light in. This also inspired me to use the colours of the forest, not only green and brown but many natural variations to provide a playful environment for the children.

I love this project. The images are so well rendered and they really convey the fun and playful atmosphere. This must have been a lot of hard work – great job!
