SAINT MATTHEW’S NURSERY DESIGN

Saint Matthew’s Nursery is part of a larger school and is located in a separate building on the site. There are two reception classes and one nursery class for 3 to 5 year-old children. There is a small office corner incorporated between the two reception classes to enable the staff to prepare necessary paperwork; the main office is located in a separate building. When designing this nursery I had a chance to analyse the requirements and regulations for young children’s design, and have developed a greater understanding of children’s needs. Apart from many other interior design decisions I had to solve tight space issues, reconsider areas for each activity, choose child-friendly materials and solve lighting issues. The projecting windows I designed complete the task for a protective and cosy nook to snuggle into.  One of the other tasks
was to make a welcoming cloakroom from a small, existing one – this was important when considering a space where children are temporarily separated from their parents. My main aim was to make a sophisticated and welcoming nursery where children would enjoy staying, playing and learning.
