Anna M Krukowska
Chroma
The ongoing dispute about whether photography belongs in the fine art world has always held my attention. I therefore decided to examine where – if it exists – would the border be between them, and place my work on that line. I often find that using a camera can be very confining and it does not express everything that I want to show. Painting, on the other hand, has far greater flexibility, but it is not a true record of the world.
This project is the result of joining photography and painting, creating a new visual language that is both practical and unique. The photographs were produced with a classic large format monorail camera, then the negatives were painted with a couple of layers of paint. The last step was printing C-type images in colour, this way the photographs and the paint are merged.
The accurate and detailed appearance of the person is captured within the photograph, while the emotions I feel towards the portrait are expressed in the paint. In this manner, these images create a link between these two seemingly distant worlds.
