Without Sound.
Transitional periods and change affect everyone differently. Change is part of life yet learning to adapt and cope often leaves people feeling lost, confused and hopeless. Whilst I have not used myself within this work, it is based upon my own emotional journey. In often finding myself consumed by waiting whether it be for answers, knowledge or success, it occurred to me in just waiting, I am not existing fully, instead merely getting to the next level of societies tick sheet. Yet life is so delicate, and it is wasteful to remain stationary due to fear, comfort or social expectations. The frustration I felt when realising I was letting life pass me by, inspired me to explore the notion of waiting and why it plays such a large factor within life.
My portraits are engulfed in silence, as my sitters lay frozen in their own inability to take risks and live. Although walls surround them, barren environments convey their true feelings of solitude and vulnerability. In creating these intimate moments of stillness and reflection I hope to convey the loneliness and inner conflictions felt when trapped in a place of waiting, whilst reminding us how fragile life truly is.
