Mate Dobray
Starchild
Inspired by the Uncanny Valley – a hypothesis which proposes that a near-faithful human representation can be repulsive – this body of work intends to create caricatures of beauty. While traditional caricatures emphasize the characteristic features of an individual, these images exaggerate the qualities that make someone beautiful instead.
Judging from the current trends in advertising, media and medicine, we seem to be converging towards an unknown yet highly desirable Utopia when it comes to the way people appear. This project aims to explore how long we can keep up this progression, as part of an experiment to see whether there is such a thing as “too beautiful”.
In these images, elements often associated with beauty were amplified, and blemishes were reduced to a hyper-perfectionist level. Although we may expect such modifications to yield desirable results, we might find ourselves distanced from these portraits. They may be beautiful indeed, but are they human?
